How to Remove Harley-Davidson Tank Decals

All Harley-Davidson tank decals that I know of are clearcoated over from the factory. So you are limited on option on how you can remove these. Below are a few that I have used in the past.

  1. Use a quality razor blade scraper. Be sure you use a new blade. This gives you a better chance to remove the decals without really tearing up the paint.
Sometimes I even get lucky enough to remove the decal without even tearing it up. This is very tedious and tricky to do though. Sometimes it helps to place the tank in the sun first to get the decal hot. I had good success doing this on the 2003 anniversary stripes. In a few instances, I even reused the stripe decals.
Once you get the decals removed, you'll need to feather the paint out. Sometimes I would even strip the area where the decal was. The key is to 'feather' it back into the old paint so you have a nice subtle transition. Then you should prime this area.
If you don't do this yourself, a local auto bodyshop will help you out.
  2. You can just go straight to the sanding process. I've used 80 grit DA (Dual Action Sander) and basically stripped the side of the tank with this. Then the area should be sanded with 180

  3. Instead of using a DA, I've used a 'big wheel' which is basically a buffer type setup, with a sanding pad on it. Of course once you strip the decal area, you'll need to sand the area so the edges are 'feathered' in. You can use 80 girt for this. Then go over it with 180 DA

To install a decal, I normally paint the tank. clearcoat it. Then resand it. THEN I apply the decal. Let it sit for a half day or so. Then reclear
